Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the great blog.
Regards
MarcoMarco Cevolihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12983856958859836122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20155610.post-21265670595821152112010-03-07T06:17:57.760+00:002010-03-07T06:17:57.760+00:00@Kirti: I enjoy your blog and had it in my blog ro...@Kirti: I enjoy your blog and had it in my blog roll for that reason until the migration to the new domain killed my whole list for some reason. While I might be skeptical of some points, I think you present a very balanced view of MT and make one of the best cases for it that I have read yet. So stealing your mixed capitalization for "empty" was not at all intended in a negative way.

What irritates me is the starry-eyed, ill-informed trust that some have in this emergent technology as well as the fears of it. This past week I received a number of help inquiries from a friend who was busy translating bad English presumably written by some flavor of European IT geek. The greatest difficulty of the text was the need to read between the lines and try to figure out the actual words intended as opposed to what was written. We both decided in the end that it would be interesting to see if a machine could handle such a text (all too frequent) in our lifetimes. I doubt it.Kevin Lossnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14727800526216764023noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20155610.post-30186185128996106642010-03-07T00:52:27.082+00:002010-03-07T00:52:27.082+00:00Thank you for mentioning me in this, even though i...Thank you for mentioning me in this, even though it might be dubious praise. There are definitely good reasons for skepticism, after all MT does have 50 years of failure to present to the casual observer.

But for lots of people around the world it does actually open doors to information that they could not get otherwise.

While I do not think that it will replace humans in my lifetime, I am pretty sure that it will start being used much more frequently in projects with highly repetitive content or where the content just flows too fast.

TM was also feared and reviled when it first arrived but it has become an essential element of many translators toolkits. I think this will happen for MT as well.

I look forward to your ongoing comments.Kirti Vasheehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16795076802721564830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20155610.post-38146661230317362412010-02-27T11:31:26.452+00:002010-02-27T11:31:26.452+00:00I enjoyed reading this article -- thank you, Kevin...I enjoyed reading this article -- thank you, Kevin. The real "coup de grace" comes with the Google translations; a really nice twist! And an effective one -- at least as far as I can judge from the joke German :-)Mike Hodshonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20155610.post-87777025693808395522010-02-22T20:52:55.611+00:002010-02-22T20:52:55.611+00:00RE: "Now all that matters is speed".
