All the more so for an excellent young colleague like Joana, whose skills are needed by the rest of us. This is a technology worthy of all attention to extend its reach to every language where significant numbers of people suffer the bad effects of long keyboard use or have other issues. And those who are OK now may not be so well off in 5, 10 or 20 years hitting the keys with their fingers. But just as Isabel said, spect to text technology allows a concentration on the text which is simply not possible with fingers on the keyboard. My hands are now often engaged pointing at parts of a complex German sentence on the screen to keep track of the relationship of one part to another as I dictate the text of the translation. Without my hands free, some of that nasty stuff would take much longer to untangle and translate.Kevin Lossnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14727800526216764023noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20155610.post-86830433781027930082015-01-25T21:45:50.187+00:002015-01-25T21:45:50.187+00:00I can only second that Kevin. I'm not a user ...I can only second that Kevin. I'm not a user of these solutions at all, but this was the first real presentation I have ever seen of anyone using Dictation software and apart from the obvious pleasure I got from seeing this work so well in the Studio environment, I was moved by the very obvious benefits this brings that go further than simply increasing the rate of translation speed. I also didn't realise until this event how much difference the language made to the dictation software so I hope other solutions will follow the lead of Apple in this regard.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20155610.post-72226280129935969472015-01-25T21:27:21.514+00:002015-01-25T21:27:21.514+00:00I hope to have a guest blog post up soon with vide...I hope to have a guest blog post up soon with videos of the ladies and their dictation in Portuguese. I'm really excited by that. Dictation has made such a difference to my life and work, and it has upset me a great deal that only a few privileged languages have solutions for that, Portuguese not being one of them. I see it as an essential tool for coping with an often unfavorable business environment here. I am so happy that there is now a solution for people in Portuguese-speaking countries and that more may be coming. I've seen an example of Ms. Bernardo's unedited writing in English, which has made it clear that this is a young colleague with a lot of skill - a good mind that deserves tools like speech recognition so that customers can have the full benefit of the good work she will do in the years ahead and she can enjoy the full earning potential that such skill can offer. The more that software providers such as SDL and Kilgray can do to improve the use of speech recognition in the environments, the more everyone will benefit.Kevin Lossnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14727800526216764023noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20155610.post-46072942584678277052015-01-25T21:17:39.036+00:002015-01-25T21:17:39.036+00:00No, the voice reaching the students every week and...No, the voice reaching the students every week and doing a lot of good with the students is that of David Hardisty, the teacher who organized this day. It is an honor to support people like him, who care very much about doing the right thing for the next generation of colleagues. I hope to be able in the future to facilitate more exchanges and collaboration between working professionals and first-class academics like him, who do their best to do the right thing for their students. (He also does a lot of freelance translation to stay in touch with the "real world" that you and I work in. That's not so easy with a teaching load and kids, and I don't think I could do it and deliver the quality of instruction he does.)<br />Kevin Lossnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14727800526216764023noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20155610.post-75356290783928688662015-01-25T21:04:28.238+00:002015-01-25T21:04:28.238+00:00Excellent article, much appreciated.
